Shire Hall was built in 1837-8 as the Assize Court and continued to be the County Court until 1988. The building was constructed using Bodmin Moor granite and locally quarried slate.
Today the Shire Hall has been refurbished and looks magnificent as the centrepiece in Market Folly Square. The building is now home to the Tourist Information Centre, the Town and Countryside Centre and the Court Room Experience where it is possible to witness a trial and act as a member of the jury.
Bodmin is former county town of Cornwall and is situated next to the breathtaking Bodmin moor which includes popular treks to Roughter and Brown Willy. The towns name comes from the Cornish words "bod" (dwelling) and "monegh" (monks). The town is now bypassed by most travellers entering or leaving Cornwall by road or rail.
